Gavin Ward Departs Arrow McLaren After Milestone Season

In a decision that catches the racing industry by surprise, Gavin Ward has announced his departure from Arrow McLaren. The move comes after two transformative years with the IndyCar team, during which Ward's leadership helped propel the organization to unprecedented success.

The decision for Ward to leave was made amicably, with both Ward and the executive leadership at Arrow McLaren in agreement. "We've grown significantly from where we were when he joined the team in 2022, and he was a big part of that transformation," noted Zak Brown, the CEO of McLaren, highlighting the impact Ward had during his tenure.

Joining Arrow McLaren in 2022, Ward brought with him a wealth of experience from his previous successful stints in motorsports. His educational background in automotive engineering from Oxford Brookes University in England laid the foundation for a stellar career. Initially, Ward cut his teeth with a local Formula Ford racing team, which paved the way for a nine-year spell at the prestigious Red Bull Racing team in Formula 1. Famed for contributing to four championship titles and over 50 victories, Ward was instrumental in Red Bull Racing's acclaimed 1-2 finish at the 2013 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, a moment he celebrated with a winning constructor’s trophy.

Ward's transition to the IndyCar Series began with Team Penske in 2018. However, his journey to Arrow McLaren wasn't immediate; he faced a nearly year-long wait before joining the team. Once he joined, Ward was pivotal in steering Arrow McLaren to its most successful season to date. Under his guidance, the team secured a record-setting 2024 season, marking it as the most victorious in the team's IndyCar history.

Despite narrowly missing out on a triumph at the Indianapolis 500, Ward's influence fueled Arrow McLaren to a season-high of three wins the previous year, spearheaded by the stellar performances of driver Pato O'Ward. The foundation laid during Ward's tenure is expected to continue solidifying Arrow McLaren's competitive edge, supported by new key leadership acquisitions like Tony Kanaan and Brian Barnhart.

The strategic moves are part of Arrow McLaren's ambition to topple the long-standing dominance of IndyCar's championship teams. Reflecting on his time with the team, Ward stated, "I leave Arrow McLaren after two years developing a people-first culture set to topple the 20-year domination of IndyCar's championship teams. We've made major strides during my tenure."

As the team looks ahead to the 2025 season, Arrow McLaren's driver lineup is bolstered with Pato O'Ward, Christian Lundgaard, and the addition of Nolan Siegel, who joined midway through the previous season. The continuity of talent behind the wheel, combined with strategic leadership changes, positions Arrow McLaren for continued success.

While his immediate future remains undecided, Ward has opted to take a break and focus on his personal life. "I plan to spend time with my wife and two daughters while I evaluate what's next in my career," he shared, signaling a period of reflection and anticipation of future opportunities.

Gavin Ward's departure will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on Arrow McLaren. The legacy of his dynamic leadership and the successful culture he fostered during his two years at the helm promises to influence the team's trajectory in the highly competitive world of IndyCar racing.
