David Bell Out as Reds Manager After Six-Year Tenure

The Cincinnati Reds have relieved David Bell of his duties as manager, ending a six-year tenure that witnessed both highs and lows. Bell guided the Reds to a postseason berth during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season but could not consistently sustain that success. His contract ran through the 2026 season, however, the front office felt a change was necessary to revive the team's ambitions.

During his six seasons, Bell compiled a managerial record of 409-456, equating to a .473 winning percentage. While his tenure did include moments of promise, such as leading the Reds to a winning record in the 2023 season, it was ultimately marred by significant struggles. The 2022 season was particularly challenging, with the team finishing 62-100. This season, the Reds positioned fourth in the National League Central with a 76-81 record, failing to meet expectations once again.

Reds General Manager Nick Krall addressed the decision, stating, "David provided the kind of steadiness that we needed in our clubhouse over the last few seasons." Yet, Krall acknowledged that a fresh perspective was required, adding, "We felt a change was needed to move the major-league team forward. We have not achieved the success we expected, and we need to begin focusing on 2025."

Freddie Benavides will step in as the interim manager for the final five games of the season. Benavides, who was drafted by the Reds as an infielder in 1987, has been a part of the coaching staff since 2019, working closely with Bell as his bench coach. Benavides' extensive association with the franchise provides some continuity as the Reds navigate through this transitional phase.

Bell's managerial career with the Reds places him as the 62nd manager in the franchise's storied history. His 409 wins secure him the eighth spot among Reds managers, while his 456 losses rank fourth. Despite the mixed results, Bell's impact on the team is undeniable, serving as a steady hand during turbulent times.

The change in Cincinnati adds to a wave of managerial shifts in Major League Baseball this year. Bell is the third managerial casualty of the 2024 season, following Pedro Grifol of the White Sox and Scott Servais of the Mariners, both of whom were dismissed in August.

As the Reds look ahead, the organization will now embark on a search for a new leader to helm the team. With a rich history and a passionate fan base, the Reds’ management will be under pressure to find a candidate who can reinvigorate the club and steer it back towards contention.
